"The Ragged Roses" met als frontvrouw Katrien Van Proeyen kan je ook bestempelen als "Shotgun Sally 2.0". In die mate zelfs dat Katrien zich laat omringen door muzikanten die al een hele tijd meegaan in de roots en rockabilly wereld. Bart Rico Ulens was er met "Shotgun Sally" ook al bij en verder bestaan deze "The Ragged Roses" uit Sebi Lee en Jimmy Van Iersel. Op 12 november wordt hun eerste en hopelijk ook niet laatste boreling boven de doopvont gehouden.
Deze "Do Me Right" en het respect dat hiermee gepaard gaat dwingen ze af met maar liefst 11 originals van de 12 songs die op het album te beluisteren zijn. De hofleverancier van de nummers is guitarslinger Rico Ulens al dan niet in co-writing met Katrien zelf. Het album komt uit bij het label "Rootz Rumble", een onderverdeling van "Naked" en is een mix van rock 'n roll, soms met een vleugje rockabilly, maar steeds drijvend op een 50-ties attitude.
Openen doen deze "The Ragged Roses" met "Voodoo Hoodoo" en zo is meteen ook de trend gezet. Nummers als "Crying Over You" en titeltrack "Do Me Right" laten een rauwere Katrien op je los in de spirit van een Wanda Jackson. Het op een rumba gedreven ritme maakt voor mezelf "Falling Out Of Love" een van de betere nummers op dit album. Whoo, I Feel Blue...
Ook al is "Sugar Coated Lovin’" een original dat werd geschreven door Rico en Katrien, toch dacht ik voor ik het hoorde dat de titel even gelinkt zou zijn met het bluesje van Lazy Lester, maar nee hoor we zitten volledig in het retro gebeuren. Het daaropvolgende "Never Gonna Break My Heart" betreft hier rock 'n roll on speed, en zo komen we dan uit bij die ene cover die op deze "Do Me Right" te horen is.
"Runaway" is een meer dan behoorlijke bewerking van de million selling hit van Del Shannon uit 1961. Hier in een voortreffelijk en hedendaags arrangement. Afsluiters zijn het rockabilly gedreven "Right Track" en het kiekebisj opwekkende "Way Back Home", alsof de nostalgie voor "The Shadows" nog steeds hot is. "Do Me Right" is een prachtig nieuw album in een oud jasje dat roept naar een terugkeer van "Rockin' Around Turnhout".

Last June we wrote that Belgian band Shotgun Sally was calling it quits after six years, one CD (2017) and a vinyl single (2019), because they were heading in a different musical direction, but singer Katrien Van Proeyen immediately announced that we were not rid of her yet. Lo and behold: six months later she presents the debut CD of her new band The Ragged Roses, a clear break in style with the straight ahead jukebox rock 'n' roll of Shotgun Sally's early days, but at the same time the logical continuation of it, and recorded with the last Shotgun Sally live line up. Both sides of the Shotgun Sally single we were so enthusiastic about, Never Gonna Break My Heart and Sugar Coated Lovin', also feature on the Ragged Roses CD which rocks in the same let's give it all style. Katrien sings, moans, groans and hiccups like a cat in heat and puts her whole soul and body into her vocal performance, adequately supported by drummer Jimmy Van Iersel (after these recordings replaced by Johan Bekkers, a new face in our scene but really good, the band assures us) and double bass player Sébi Lee, normally lord, master and all round entertainer on his piano but here in a modest and restrained role: no trace of a piano on the whole CD. The Ragged Roses sound is determined by guitarist Bart "Rico" Ulens (Benvis & his Rockets, Rhumba Kings and a lot of other Belgian bands) who breaks out of the rockabilly mold and steers his rock 'n' roll guitar partly in a rock direction that fits the modern Ragged Roses songs like a glove, from the bouncy Hoodoo Voodoo over the flashy finger blistering Crying Over You to cheerful songs like Tell Me and title track Do Me Right, interspersing echoes of The Stray Cats (the descending chord progression of One Look), The Paladins, The Seatsniffers and Sin Alley with swamp fever dreams like the hypnotic Cravin' For Your Lovin' and the sultry Falling Out Of Love with which they go down the funnel of love. Right Track is the wildest right track track since Joe Clay's Get On The Right Track, and they finish the job with Way Back Home, a soulful ballad that is neither soul nor blues, just excellent. The CD contains 11 songs written by Bart Ulens and Katrien Van Proeyen and one cover, but what a cover: Runaway, slower than Del Shannon, with Katrien writhing around, turning it into a sexy, horny song, and a guitar that slithers from mexicana over exotica to surf, almost six minutes long but of an orgasmic power. I had no idea what to expect from The Ragged Roses as I have not yet seen them, but I am impressed by this debut of a band that has discovered its maturity. The competition in Belgium will have to take notice, both on rock 'n' roll and non-rock 'n' roll stages.

This is a new name to me, and apparently the ragged roses have not been together for that long but their sound certainly isn’t new. This belgian foru-piece specialise in vintage rock and roll, rockabilly, and bluesy sounds – guitar, upright bass (or slap bass as the old rockabilly albums used to put it, andthet feels more appropriate here) and drums back up vocalist katrien van proeyen.
Some of the material is full-tilt – the opening three numbers certainly take no prisoners, and ‘right track’ is just pure rocking energy – and expect to hear hints of both etta james and wanda jackson. A few tracks are less frantic, and bluesier (lend an ear to the closing blues-ballad ‘way back home’, for example), though the entire album is certainly bluesy enough! There is just one borrowed compositionon the set, a wonderfully-reworked version, slightly slower than the original, of del shannon’s ‘runaway’ with its almost spanish guitar licks (with added reverb) and katrien’s sultry vocal creating quite an impression.
Mind you, as you might have gathered for yourself, the whole album makes quite an impression anyway… check it out.

Une grosse dose de rock’n’roll old school mélangée à des accents empreints de modernisme, des influences qui regardent autant vers Etta James que vers Wanda Jackson avec pour la fine bouche des relents qui nous transportent du côté de Howlin’ Wolf mais aussi des Cramps, c’est tout ce que l’on peut trouver dans cette formation belge qui nous délivre cet automne « Do Me Right », un premier album particulièrement abouti et surtout une de ces galettes qui laissent forcément des traces sur le public. Emmené par Katrien Van Proeyen au chant, The Ragged Roses s’appuie sur la guitare de Bart Rico Ulens, sur la contrebasse de Sebi Lee qui tient aussi à l’occasion le piano et le saxophone et enfin sur la batterie de Jimmy Van Iersel, tout ce joli monde proposant une musique riche et goûteuse qui donne ses lettres de noblesse au swing et au groove. En onze pièces originales et une reprise de l’immense tube « Runaway » de Del Shannon, le quartet n’en finit plus de mettre le feu à la platine avec des morceaux qui, une fois transposés à la scène, réjouiront l’assistance grâce à un véritable talent d’entertainer de la frontwoman au look bien marqué et à une solidité musicale à toute épreuve assurée par des routiers au long cours de la scène belge. On se régale tout au long des trois quarts d’heure d’une musique à la fois roots et enjouée ponctuée par des pépites de rock comme « Hoodoo Voodoo », « Tell Me », « Sugar Coated Lovin’ » et autres « Right Track » mais aussi par des pièces beaucoup plus langoureuses comme « Falling Out Of Love » ou « Way Back Home », des titres 100% plaisir qui n’en finissent plus d’installer une ambiance vintage mais absolument pas désuète auprès d’une assistance qui à coup sûr appréciera la très belle tenue de route d’un groupe qui n’a pas fini de faire parler de lui. A découvrir sur album avant de confirmer par une véritable explosion live !

De muziek die we aangeboden kregen in de jaren vijftig blijft hedendaagse nieuwe groepen en songwriters inspireren bij het creëren van nieuwe nummers in de toen populaire rock’n’roll- en rockabilly-genres. Zo kregen we onlangs het album “Do Me Right” van de Belgische formatie ‘The Ragged Roses’ aangeboden op onze redactie.
Die nieuwe rootsrockersgroep ontstond uit de as van de in 2015 opgerichte Leuvense formatie ‘Shotgun Sally’ rond frontvrouw-zangeres Katrien Van Proeyen. Denk daar voor het podium Bart Rico Ulens met zijn elektrische gitaar bij, de contrabas van Sebi Lee die ook op saxofoon en piano speelt en drummer Jimmy Van Iersel en u hoort een rockgroep zoals die midden vorige eeuw voor het entertainment pleegde te zorgen in danstenten en clubs.
Op het album “Do Me Right” brengen ‘The Ragged Roses’ twaalf nummers waarvan Bart Ulens er elf zelf heeft gecomponeerd en Katrien Van Proeyen de teksten schreef van zes liedjes. De enige gecoverde song op deze cd is een opmerkelijke, bijna 6 minuten durende interpretatie van de klassieker “Runaway” die iedere wat oudere muziekliefhebber zeker nog kent in de originele versie van Del Shannon uit 1961.
Dansplezier wordt u op dit album van begin tot einde door ‘The Ragged Roses’ aangeboden in lekker swingende nummers zoals rockabillytracks “Hoodoo Voodoo”, “Crying Over You”, “Sugar Coated Lovin’” en “Right Track”, met daarnaast enkele opwindende gitaarrockers met “Do Me Right” (zie live-uitvoering op de tweede video), “Tell Me” en “Never Gonna Break My Heart”.
Het bij dit muziekgenre obligaat thuishorende rustmoment wordt op dit album drie keer geboden in de knap gezongen ballad “Falling Out Of Love”, in het nummer “One Look (Tangled Up In Love)” en in de heerlijk nostalgische tearjerker “Way Back Home” waarmee deze plaat met een hoogtepunt wordt afgesloten. Wie houdt van de sound van legendarische vrouwenstemmen zoals die van Patsy Cline, Wanda Jackson of Etta James zal zijn gading ongetwijfeld ook kunnen terugvinden in de liedjes op het album “Do Me Right” van ‘The Ragged Roses’.

“Do Me Right” è l’album di debutto della band belga The Ragged Roses, capitanata da Katrien Van Proeyen (Shotgun Sally), fuori il 12 novembre 2021 su Rootz Rumble. Prendi due galloni di Wanda Jackson, due litri di Etta James, un cucchiaio di Howlin’ Wolf, un bicchierino di Dick Dale, aggiungi un po’ di Cramps e una pinta di Nick Curran, mescola tutto, shakera e accendi il fuoco. Il risultato: The Ragged Roses.
Una ricetta vincente che sforna undici tracce inedite e una cover di Del Shannon, “Runaway”, una combinazione di ritmi serrati e trascinanti, guidati dagli interventi brillanti delle chitarre di Bart Ulens, a partire dai primi brani che aprono la track list, “Hoodoo Voodoo” e “Crying Over You”, o dal pezzo che dà il nome al disco, “Do Me Right”.
Si corre a tutta velocità fino a “Falling Out Of Love”, primo singolo uscito; la seconda metà della scaletta prende qua e là ritmi più slow, senza perdere però mai del tutto il piglio deciso che contraddistingue tutto il disco e a conti fatti l’album è a tutti gli effetti un’iniezione di energia dall’inizio alla fine. Tanto lo fa sicuramente la Van Proeyen che, perfettamente calata nella parte con questo interessante spirito old style frizzante e sbarazzino, provoca e cattura.
Nella cover di Shannon, aperta dal contrabbasso di Sèbi Lee, c’è un ottimo tocco personale che stravolge le carte in tavola senza snaturare l’originale; anche qui le chitarre guidano sicure, si viaggia in un’ambientazione marcatamente Western e a momenti si scivola nel Beat (Quentin Tarantino apprezzerebbe sicuramente).
Ci si muove comodamente tra Rock’n’roll e Rockabilly, batteria, contrabbasso e chitarra elettrica e a ballarci sopra la voce provocante di Katrien che un po’ gioca, un po’ ammicca, per certi versi tiene le redini di tutto, per altri si lascia portare da un apparato strumentale ben apparecchiato – che sicuramente viene valorizzato ancora di più nella dimensione live – e capace di supportare alla perfezione la personalità dirompente della cantante e leader di questa una band, davvero promettente.

Neem twee liter Wanda Jackson, twee liter Etta James, een shot Dick Dale, een snuifje Cramps en een pint Nick Curran, meng dat allemaal door elkaar, schud het, roer het en steek het in brand. Het resultaat dat je dan krijgt is The Ragged Roses. Dat is wat het promoblaadje ons vertelt. The Ragged Roses drijven op de rock'n'roll spirit uit de jaren vijftig, met de attitude van moderne roots revolverhelden. The Ragged Roses zijn een nieuwe band, met frontvrouw Katrien, als de belichaming van een wilde stage act, die verbluffende zang combineert met verbluffende looks. Katrien wordt gesteund door een stelletje, ondanks hun relatieve jonge leeftijd, veteranen van de Belgische roots scene. Op twaalf november verscheen hun debuutalbum 'Do Me Right', met daarop elf zelf geschreven nummers en één cover. De meeste nummers werden geschreven door gitarist Bart Ulens, al dan niet in samenwerking met zangeres Katrien Van Proeyen.
The Ragged Roses trekken meteen alle registers open met de uitstekende opener 'Hoodoo Voodoo', dat op een overtuigende wijze wordt gezongen door Katrien. Met twee prachtige solo's, waar de nodige galm op zit, etaleert Ulens zijn klasse op de gitaar. Gastmuzikant Joes Brandt hanteert in deze swingende opener de shakers. Katrien en haar jongens steken nog een tandje bij voor het rockende 'Crying Over You'. Katrien klinkt hier als de reïncarnatie van Wanda Jackson. De uitstekende ritmesectie, met drummer Jimmy Van Iersel en bassist Sebi Lee, blijven van jetje geven in de knappe titeltrack 'Do Me Right'. Een zelfzekere Katrien laat duidelijk horen wat ze verwacht van haar geliefde. Ook met het aantrekkelijke liefdeslied 'Tell Me' blijven The Ragged Roses hangen in de golden fifties en sixties. Bart Ulens kruidt het nummer met pittig en snedig gitaarwerk. Het slagwerk op 'Tell Me' komt van gastmuzikant Dennis de Gier.
Het ritme vertraagt, maar het vintage geluid blijft in 'Falling Out Of Love'. Het heeft een rumba ritme en Katrien zingt dit nummer ook zwoeler. De sterke steeds terugkerende rifff is heel bepalend voor de sound van 'Cravin' For Your Lovin''. Het is voor mij één van de beste nummers op het album en gitarist Ulens haalt weer fantastisch uit op zijn sixstring. Het nummer wisselt regelmatig van zacht naar iets bitsiger en dat geeft 'Cravin' For Your Lovin'' nog meer cachet. Vervolgens horen we een zwoele, maar tegelijk ook zelfzekere Katrien in 'One Look (Tangled Up Love)'. Een ander pareltje dat zeker volle dansvloeren zal zorgen is 'Sugar Coated Lovin'', dat gitarist Ulens en zangeres Van Proeyen samen schreven. Het heerlijke pianowerk is van Sebi Lee. Ook voor 'Never Gonna Break My Heart' hoef je niet van de dansvloer, want dit is pure rock'n'roll. De fantastische snarensolo van Ulens geeft het nummer nog een extra touch.
Sebi Lee trekt op de staande bas de cover 'Runaway' van Del Shannon op gang. The Ragged Roses slagen er met verve in om hun eigen stempel op het nummer te drukken, zonder aan de herkenbaarheid van het nummer te raken. De versie van The Ragged Roses is minder poppy, door de galm op de gitaar van Ulens wordt er meer een western sfeer gecreëert. De liefhebbers van rockabilly kunnen hun hart ophalen in het verschroeiende 'Right Track'. Het album wordt afgesloten met de melodieuze en meeslepende ballade 'My Back Home', dat weer op een voortreffelijke wijze gezongen word door Katrien. Ook Bart Ulens schittert weer met een fijne en gevoelvolle gitaar solo. Voor de muziekliefhebbers die met hart en ziel blijven hangen zijn in de jaren vijftig en zestig is 'Do Me Right' een absolute aanrader. Ook de liefhebbers van rock'n'roll en rockabilly komen met 'Do Me Right' zeker aan hun trekken. The Ragged Roses zijn een aanwinst voor onze Belgische muziekscene. (7,5/10)

"Do Me Right" nastupni je album grupe The Ragged Roses, koji je službeno objavljen 3. studenog preko izdavačkih kuća Rootz Rumble/NAKED i uz promociju Big D promotions.
I evo, 23 dana kasnije želim s vama podijeliti svoje dobre vibracije, koje su nastale i uzrokovane su onim što čujem. A što nam nude The Ragged Roses? Oni, putem svojih 12 skladbi, koje su se našle na ovom njihovom nastupnom albumu "Do Me Right", nude samo dobru zabavu, ludi provod i iscrpljujući ples, koji će vas doslovno uništiti svojim ubitačnim ritmom.
Njihov glazbeni sadržaj doslovno juri kroz gotovo 45' i, vjerujte mi, ni trenutka nećete biti razočarani, jer bend tutnji kroz album. Ekipa svojom nadahnutom miksaturom rock & rolla 1950-ih, ali i uz sve uvažavanje modernih glazbenih kretanja, jednostavno grabi naprijed i neposustaje.
U prvom planu je sjajna pjevačica Katrien, koja u sebi spaja snažan, impresivan vokal, svoj stas i izgled te uz odličan bend daje ludu kombinaciju od koje sve pršti od dobre mjuze.
I da, iako su relativno mladi, ovi glazbenici već spadaju u veterane belgijske roots scene.
Činjenica je da Belgija ima itekako vrsne blues glazbenike oko kojih je stvorena doista dobra vibra i atmosfera.
Kontrabas, gitare, groovy bubnjevi doslovno vas preplavljuju svojim ogromnim glazbenim valovima, koji se samo preljevaju i potapaju vas te, stoga, pazite se dobro... mogli bi se utopiti.
Kako se radi o impresivnom autorskom djelu 11 autorskih skladbi i jedne obrade velikog Del Shannona, govori vam sve. Kako se pjesme redaju ova sjajna ekipa stalno vas iznenađuje i žestoko vas udara, direktno baš tamo gdje treba i vi ste na podu u "knockout-u".

Liderados por la explosiva y siempre imprevisible y aguerrida Katrien Van Proeyen, el resto de músicos son veteranos de la escena musical belga e incluyen a Bart Rico Ulens a la guitarra, Sebi Lee al contrabajo, piano, saxo y voces y Jimmy Van Iersel a la batería.
Este trabajo que ahora presentan contiene once temas propios más la versión de “Runaway” compuesta y escrita por Del Shannon. ’Do Me Right’ is het debuutalbum van de nieuwe Belgische rootsformatie The Ragged Roses. Helemaal nieuw in het vak zijn de leden echter niet. Frontvrouw is zangeres Katrien Van Proeyen. Voor wie het Belgische rootswereldje een beetje volgt, zal haar dadelijk associëren met de bands Shotgun Sally en Cat & The Bearded Monkeys. Ook in haar nieuwe band laat Katrien zich omringen met een aantal bekende namen. Zo is er Bart Rico Ulens op gitaar, Sebi Lee op upright bass, piano, sax en backing vocals en Jimmy Van Iersel zit aan de drums. Op dit album wordt Jimmy op één nummer, namelijk op ‘Tell Me’ vervangen door Dennis de Gier en Joes Brands mag de shakers hanteren op opener ‘Hoodoo Voodoo’, een fraai staaltje van hedendaagse rockabilly trouwens. Het album telt 12 tracks, waaronder 1 cover. Dat is niet minder dan het van Del Shannon gekende ‘Runaway’. Voor de andere nummers tekenen Katrien Van Proeyen en Bart Rico Ulens. Diezelfde Bart dook ook samen met een andere bekende, namelijk Tim Ielegems in de producersstoel. Al vlug wordt duidelijk dat The Ragged Roses een enorm straffe band is. Vocaal komt Katrien stevig uit de hoek op de strakke ritmesectie, waarna alles mooi ingekleurd wordt door het sublieme gitaarwerk, piano en sax. Dat resulteert dan in songs die de authenticiteit van de rootsgenres niet uit het oog verliezen, maar er wel een hedendaagse twist aan geven. De mix van rock-‘n-roll, rockabilly en rhythm & blues die daardoor aan de oppervlakte komt, geeft dit album een serieuze boost. Creativiteit ten top dus, zoals zeker te horen is in het supermooie trage ‘Falling Out Of Love’ of het bluesy getinte ‘One Look (Tangled Up In Love)’, genre waar ook afsluiter ‘Way Back Home’ toe behoort. Ook het vermelden waard is zeker de persoonlijke aanpak van Del Shannons hit ‘Runaway’. Super! En wat te denken van de rechttoe rechtaan rocker ‘Right Track’?
Mix Wanda Jackson met Etta James, Dick Dale, Cramps en Nick Curran en je hebt The Ragged Roses. Beter konden wij het niet omschrijven. Niet te missen!
'Do Me Right' is the debut album by the new Belgian roots formation The Ragged Roses. However, the members are not completely new in the field. Front woman is singer Katrien Van Proeyen. Anyone familiar with the Belgian roots scene will immediately associate her with the bands Shotgun Sally and Cat & The Bearded Monkeys. In her new band, Katrien also surrounds herself with a number of well-known names. There is Bart Rico Ulens on guitar, Sebi Lee on upright bass, piano, sax and backing vocals and Jimmy Van Iersel on drums.
Mix Wanda Jackson with Etta James, Dick Dale, Cramps and Nick Curran and you have The Ragged Roses. We couldn't describe it better. Don’t miss it!

La scène Rockabilly européenne est toujours très active. Rien que pour la France, il est conseiller de se référer aux fameuses compilations 'Rockers Kulture. The French Rockabilly'. The Ragged Roses, eux, viennent de Belgique. A l'écoute, on pense de suite aux Blue Caps de Gene Vincent accompagnant Wanda Jackson au chant. La chanteuse ici se nomme Katrien Van Proeyen. Sa voix sensuelle, tantôt mutine, tantôt rageuse habite littéralement les 12 titres de cet excellent CD. Le guitariste Bart Rico Ulens, joue sur une Gretsch, sans doute une Duo Jet. On retrouve le lyrisme, le vibrato et l'écho de la guitare de Cliff Gallup des 'Casquette Bleues'. La rythmique, contrebasse slappée par Sebi Lee et le groove de la batterie de Jimmy Van Iersel ou de Dennis de Gier (sur 'Tell Me') font le reste, 11 compositions qui vous feront vous lever et une étonnante reprise du 'Runaway' de Del Shannon. Cela fait bientôt presque 70 ans que des groupes jouent cette musique et ce n'est pas prêt de s'arrêter. Le Rockabilly vivra encore longtemps ; on peut compter sur les The Ragged Roses.

De nieuwe Belgische band The Ragged Roses is ontstaan uit de in 2015 in Leuven opgerichte band Shotgun Sally. In die band waren nogal wat wisselingen in de samenstelling en de muzikale focus veranderende van covers naar het spelen van eigen songs. Daarom werd besloten om hun debuutalbum ‘Do Me Right onder de nieuwe naam The Ragged Roses uit te brengen.
De band bestaat nu uit zangeres Katrien Proeyen, gitarist Bart Rico Ulens, contrabassist, saxofonist en pianist Sebi Lee en de nieuwe drummer John Bekkers. Drummer op het album is de oude drummer Jimmy van Iersel.
De band omschrijft hun muziek als volgt: Neem twee liter Wanda Jackson, twee liter Etta James, een shot Dick Dale, een snuifje Crambs, en een pintje Nick Curran. Het geheel door elkaar mixen, roeren, schudden en in de brand steken en dan krijg je als resultaat The Ragged Roses.
Het deksel vliegt in het openingsnummer Hoodoo Voodoo meteen van de stomende ketel. Swingende rockabilly. Het tempo wordt daarna nog verder opgevoerd in Crying Over You. Drums, uitbundige zang, gitaren en een heerlijke contrabas.
De eerste liter Wanda Jackson wordt, naast een lekkere gitaarsolo, in het titelnummer Do Me Right over ons uitgegoten. In het strak rockende Tell Me levert Ulens een vette gitaarsolo af en is bassist Lee ook te horen op saxofoon en piano.
De gashendel wordt een stuk dichtgedraaid in de met twangy gitaarwerk versierde ballad Falling Out Of Love. In Cravin’ For Your Lovin’ gaat het tempo weer omhoog met geweldig gitaarwerk in de geest van Dick Dale.
Relatief rustig is One Look (Tangled Up In Love), waarin de zang van Katrien Proeyen varieert van ingetogen naar explosief. Sugar Coated Lovin’ is een snelle bluesrocker in de stijl van The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
De volgende liter Wanda Jackson wordt in Never Gonna Break My Heart uitgestort. Rock ‘n‘ roll van de bovenste plank. Runaway is de enige cover op het album. De contrabassolo aan het begin, de fraaie zang en de vette gitaarlicks maken van dit nummer van Del Shannon een pareltje. Met een jagende ritmesectie wordt met Right track weer naar de hoogste versnelling geschakeld.
Het album wordt afgesloten met de mooie melodieuze ballad Way Back Home.
Conclusie:
De omschrijving van de band van hun muziek kan niet treffender worden weergegeven. Als de energie er op de plaat al van af spat, dan moet een optreden op het podium helemaal een feest zijn.

Die sechs an der belgischen band The Ragged Roses beteiligten Personen sind nicht nur Musiker, sondern deutlich hörbar auch Fans. Man nehme Wanda Jackson, Etta James, Howlin’Wolf, Dick Dale und The Cramps, mische alles gut durch und schon ergibt das die Musik der Ragged Roses. Diese Bedienungsanleitung stammt von der Band selber, die es ja schlieβlich wissen muss, ist sie doch immerhin kompositorisch für elf der zwölf Songs verantwortlich. Nur der alte Del-Shannon-Klassiker “Runaway” fällt aus del Rahmen, fügt sich aber anderseits ganz vorzüglich in diesen Zusammenhang ein. Rock’n Roll und Rockabilly ist also angesagt auf dem ersten Silberling des Sextetts, und der klingt frisch, unverbraucht und lebendig. Die Band fängt den musikalischen Zeitgeist der Fifties recht gut ein, hält sich zwar nah an das, was damals angesagt war, kopiert aber nicht bedingungslos. Bart Rico Ulens, der auch als Bandkomponist fungiert, entpuppt sich an der Gitarre als echtes Ass, und Katrien Van Proeyen flirtet geschickt mit ihren Rollen zwischen unschuldigem Teenie, frecher Rotzgöre und abgeklärter Femme fatale. Das hat durchaus Charme, auch wenn mit diesen Songs alles andere als musikalisches Neuland betreten wird.

Arrivée fracassante d’un groupe belge de roots rock car The Ragged Roses combine le rock’n’roll des années 50 avec un rendu scénique plus moderne d’ailleurs la chanteuse y est manifestement pour quelque chose puisque, son look et sa voix sont des éléments essentiels à la construction de l’image et le style du groupe. Attention n’oublions pas les musiciens qui l’accompagnent, de vieux briscards de la scène roots belge qui vont évidemment apporter à cette musique un max de groove et de swing. Premier album donc pour cette nouvelle formation qui bouscule les périodes ou plutôt la roue du temps, nous ramenant quelques décennies en arrière histoire je suppose, de nous replonger dans les racines du rock’n’roll et d’une culture essentielle dans l’histoire de la musique. Alors rappelez-vous les Cramps ou même les Meteors et donc à la fois le rock des années 50 et cette scène parallèle rock’n’roll des eighties et là, vous y serez dans l’univers de nos amis belges à l’image de ce premier extrait livré en version studio et en Live :
Une rythmique construite par la contrebasse et la batterie, un jeu à la guitare bien vintage mais jouissif à l’oreille et enfin ce timbre de voix caractéristique de Katrien Van Proeyen sont donc les éléments constitutifs du rock proposé par le groupe flamand qui effectivement, nous embarque dans le temps à l’époque aussi de certains films de Georges Lautner (Ne nous fâchons pas) où là-aussi, on entendait ces fameux accords de guitare ! Alors ne gâchons point notre plaisir et découvrons ensemble un clip-officiel de l’opus où, la voix de la chanteuse fait merveille sur ce slow-rock’n’roll qui lui-aussi, nous berce et nous emporte vers une période musicale où le swingue et le groove étaient omniprésents :

Le groupe belge The Ragged Roses nous offre à la fois un bain de jouvence et un bond dans le passé musical…et ça fait du bien, à découvrir sans plus attendre !

"Les Belges Ragged Roses ont aussi un pied dans le rockabilly et le rock ‘n’ roll de la grande époque mais sont plus que des revivalistes. La haute tenue de leur son, leurs compositions, les nombreux traits de guitare inspirés du rock d’années plus récentes, montrent que ce sont des rockeurs de leur temps, assumés et talentueux. Katrien Van Proeyen au chant, Bart Rico à la guitare, sont les deux points d’attraction du groupe mais il ne faut pas oublier Sebi Lee qui, en plus de la contrebasse, apporte aussi des contrepoints au piano et au saxophone. Rock ‘n’ roll, néo rockabilly, psychobilly, guitars twangy, ambiances sépulcrales, envolées tarentinesques, ils maîtrisent les codes et leur disque “Do Me Right” défile vite. À noter la reprise de Runaway de Del Shannon, plus connue en France à travers le tube Vanina de Dave en 1975."

This is a debut album by a Belgian quartet that blend rockabilly, rock and roll and just a soupcon of blues, the band name-checks Nick Curran, Dick Dale,, Howlin Wolf, Etta James, and Wanda Jackson among their influences. Eleven songs were written by guitar player Bart Rico Ulens, five in partnership with vocalist Katrien Van Proeyen. Bassist Sebi Lee adds occasional piano, sax and backing vocals and his upright bass adds a warm bottom end to the music while drummer Jimmy Van Iersel keeps busy on a generally upbeat selection, typified by frantic rockers like Right Track, Never Gonna Break My Heart and the title track which fairly belts along, the guitar adding a jangly, rock and roll feel to all these tunes. Cravin’ for Your Lovin’ uses the guitar riff from One Way Out would not be suitable for mainstream radio as Katrien states explicitly what she is looking forward to when her man returns home! Sugar Coated Lovin’ has some resemblance to the Lucky Lester song but sounds as if the Hamburg-era Beatles are playing it. There are just two tracks on which the pace drops and gives Katrien the opportunity to add a sultry tone to her vocals which have just a trace of accent. Falling Out of Love and album closer Way Back Home. The sole cover is Del Shannon’s Runaway, a tune that Samantha Fish also covered on her debut album. The Ragged Roses emphasise the border feel of the song by adding a prelude that features the bass and some very Mexican-sounding guitar before Katrien enters with the familiar lyrics. It is hard to sit still to the music of the Ragged Roses, so if you are a fan of this sort of catchy rockabilly you now have the pleasure of a new band to discover.
